“Transatlantic Dialogues” is an international symposium that aims to reexamine research on nineteenth-century Portugal and Brazil from a transatlantic and interdisciplinary perspective focusing on the two major intellectual figures of the period, Machado de Assis (1839-1908) and Eça de Queirós (1845-1900). The symposium will bring together some of the most innovative scholars and recognized experts to present new perspectives and insights on Machado’s and Eça’s work and its relation to realism, modernity, gender, race, visual culture, digital humanities, and postcolonial studies. Eça and Machado are not only two of the greatest novelists ever to have written in Portuguese, but they also engaged in dynamic debates that reached far outside literary circles and their geographic area.
